Zero Waste: we believe rubbish exists only when there is a lack of vision and creativity

Zero Waste: We firmly believe that waste only exists when there is a lack of vision and creativity. What may be considered garbage to one person could be a precious element for an art piece in the eyes of another.

Now, more than ever, we are committed to shedding the unnecessary baggage and clutter that weigh us down. We aim to transform what is often viewed as "old, broken, and ugly" clutter into inspiring, uplifting, and useful art.

To the 11 selected artists, we were thrilled to have offered a 2-night stay at the Hostal in November, complete with breakfast and dinner. This provided an opportunity for them to immerse themselves in the space, begin building connections, and prepare for the exciting renovation happening during the winter months.

At the end of that journey, each room bore the name of the respective artist, and we actively promoted their work through booklets, QR codes, our website, social media campaigns, and across the entire hotel.

The pressing question back then was: How would we choose among the abundance of talented individuals on our island who best fit our Hotel?

On Sunday, October 10, from 12:00 to 19:00, we invited all artists interested in participating to gather materials for upcycling from the back of the hotel. For friends reading this, if you had interesting old, broken, or upcyclable items cluttering your homes, you brought them to the Hostal before Sunday, October 10th. You were rewarded with a complimentary drink (or two!) as a token of our appreciation. Artists could incorporate elements from nature or other upcyclable materials to align with their creative vision. On Sunday, November 7th, artists were asked to present their creations during a special lunch event and had the opportunity to auction them with the audience. Following November 7th, an exhibition showcasing all the pieces created during this initiative was hosted at the Hostal. The evaluation process was based on the creativity and ingenuity displayed in the upcycling process, the utility of the final piece, its durability, and aesthetic appeal. Every artist who participated received a complimentary meal at any point during that or the following year. Collaboration among artists was encouraged, as our rooms could host two people. This allowed us to assign a room project to a team of two artists. This initiative served as our platform to not only spotlight the incredible talents on our island but also to embrace an age-old approach to life in which nothing was discarded. Everything was transformed, brought to life, and made both beautiful and functional through our remarkable human creativity and ingenuity.
